Victoria Advocate – June 25, 2024
“Two candidates’ races faced a runoff election in the Calhoun County Republican Primary on May 28, 2024. There are 13,099 registered voters in the county, 999 votes were accepted in the run-off. The Precinct 5 Constable race for Port O’ Connor was won by Chelsi Holt with 123 votes over David J. Thomas with 55 votes. The Calhoun County Tax Assessor Collector Race was won by Azalia “Sally” Bonuz with 499 votes over Tracey Johnson with 494 votes. The 5-vote difference qualified for a recount, and Ms. Johnson submitted her petition to the Republican County Chair, Russell Cain. Mr. Cain appointed a Recount Chairman, and a Recount Committee was formed to hand count the ballots in question. The Recount took place at the Calhoun County Courthouse on Monday, June 10, 2024. Ms. Bonuz and Ms. Johnson were both present during the hand recount. The results of the hand recount found 2 discrepancies, yet the final count remains. Azalia “Sally” Bonuz was declared the Republican Candidate for Calhoun County Tax Assessor and Collector election. Ms. Bonuz will appear on the ticket with Ms. Chelsi Holt and the rest of the Republican candidates chosen during the March Primary election.
The local races in Calhoun County had no Democratic opponents; therefore, the November 5, 2024 ballot will only list Republican candidates for those positions.
The election process can be confusing and cumbersome with so many different elections happening at different times and places throughout the year. The processes in place are meant to ensure that every person’s vote is counted. Anyone wishing for more information on these processes or looking to become a poll watcher can contact their local Election Administration office or their County Chairs.”
